Alkanet Root Powder is often used to obtain a purple coloring in soap. We think it is best to infuse the alkanet root powder into one of the oils you will be using for your recipe instead of adding directly into the soap.
The fastest way to do this is to put the selected oil into a cooking pot large enough to hold the amount of oil you want to infuse and add 4 rounded or heaping tablespoons of the alkanet root powder to the oil. Place the pot on the stove and turn burner on low, so as not to scorch the oil and stir until all the alkanet root powder is mixed in well. Keep heating just until the oil starts to send up little bubbles, but before boiling or flaming oil point is reached. Best temp is when it's just a bit too warm to put a finger into. Turn off heat and cover until cool and repeat the same procedure.
When oil is cooled after second heating, strain through cheesecloth or an old tee shirt, our favorite, and it's ready to be used. Be careful when staring, alkanet stains! The soap will be blue in color at first, but will change to a purple color as it cures out and the PH lowers.
